truman capote

disclaimer ... i am not a professional book reviewer ... i just love to read books ... therefore, ergo, my opinions on this and that book are solely based on my values, my interests and so on and so forth ...

now on with the bashing ....

let's get one thing straight ... i like truman capote.

in reality, i even saw the movie about his life (not really expecting to like it - http://imdb.com/title/tt0379725/)- well, his life related to the book "in cold blood" - and i liked it ... loved it even ... resulting to my buying of the book right after watching the film (book was out of stock so i had to go back a few days later) ...

in cold blood was really good ... it was gripping ... it kept my attention .. it moved me ...

so when i borrowed chireh's breakfast at tiffany's, my expectations were soaring ... only to be disappointed ... the story - the way it came to me - was just too simple and i was left hanging at the end ... not in a "makes you wonder" kind of way ... more of - "ha? anu daw? yun na? yun na yun????"... ganyan ... it's about holly golightly - isang sosyalera who gets her way around men (parang from an escort service nga ang pagkaka-describe kay holly e) ... holly became close with paul - a struggling writer ... in the end, paul helped holly escape when her name got tangled in something illegal ... i think yan na yung buong book ...

so there ... i didn't like it ... maybe there's more to it than that ... i'll probably give the movie version a chance ...

teka, i also read capote's short story - "a diamond guitar" ... and i liked it better than breakfast at tiffany's ... i understand the sadness that the guy who owned the diamond guitar (forgot his name) brought to the other prisoners ... they saw in him what they don't have anymore - a thirst for life outside their cells ....

it's been a while

it's been a while since i last placed an entry here ... it's not that i haven't been reading ... i actually think that i've been reading too much to have time to enter the cool thoughts that i get from the books ... hehehe ... but that reason (read: excuse) would defeat the purpose of this blog, right?

tama na ang paliwanag, anne.

since my last entry, i've finished two books and right now, i'm reading another one ...

"kings of infinite space" ... it's about paul who has a "ghost cat" for a pet ... who used to be a professor but because of some unfortunate events (all were of his own doing), had to work as a copyrighter - but later on was promoted to technical writer. he became aware of individuals in his office who aren't really working but for some unknown rison, still get to finish whatever tasks were given to them. as it turned out, a group of people were doing the job for them ... a group of ex-employees (laid-off) who supposedly perish in an "after being laid-off" trip ... they didn't really perish but they became hermits ... feeding on rats, cockroaches, insects found in the sewer ... paul has been given the chance to be "protected" by this group ... but for a price - he had to sacrifice his girlfriend which he refused to do ...

hm, i think that sums it up ...

for me, the book is just ok ... i got confused with some parts pa nga ... cguro, slow lang ako talaga ... well, there were metaphors in the book having to do with office life ... pero what confused me is the part where realism/fantasy intertwined ... hmmm ... cguro, slow lang ako talaga hehehe ... it did scare me a little, though ... it described "creatures" coming out of the square blocks on the ceiling of the office ... peeking from above when you're getting busy in the restroom ... paranoia tuloy ako nung nasa kalagitnaan pa lang ako ng book tas sakto na nag-stay ako ng late sa opis tas ako na lang mag-isa ... nggggiiiiii

"odd thomas by dean koontz" ... eto ang *winner* ... but before that, se-segue (definition?
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/segue) muna ako ...

this is the second dean koontz book that i've read ... and so far, his writing has been all too amazing ... the first one was "life expectancy" ... it's about a guy who received 5 prophecies from his grandfather on the day he was born ... same day that the said grandfather died ... so basically, you journey with the protagonist as he goes through each of the prophecy ... the book keeps you at the edge of your seat habang inaantay mong magkatotoo yung hula sa kanya ... and the plot just thickens ... and thickens ... and the lines are very witty ... the story's mood - albeit dark - wasn't too heavy ... it even has its cute moments ...

going back, odd thomas is about odd thomas (yep, that's the main character's name) who has the gift of sixth sense - can see the dead and "communicate" with them (the dead doesn't really talk - so he says - but they can convey emotions) and can see some things in the future ... the story is mainly about a big tragic event that will happen in odd's hometown ... and he is supposed to stop it through his gift ... the plot is actually simple but it was laid out in a very interesting manner ... and the ending? ??? wala akong masabi sa ending! good read talaga etong book na 'to.

eto ka, if i were to write the cool thoughts from these 2 books, i would probably end up writing it's entirety (exag ba???) ... ganto na lang, maganda kasi sila talaga ...

right now, i'm reading tw7sted by jessica zafra ... and just like in her other twistedss, her articles are intelligent (no matter how mundane a topic is, her writing makes it an intelligent topic) but delightfully funny ... tas there are things that she talks about that don't normally rouse my interest (ie, tennis) but the way she describes them makes me sit down and listen - kaka-search ko lang kay marat safin ... hehehe ... jessica zafra inspires me.
